What to do before bringing your hamster home

Before bringing your hamster home you need to make sure you have:

  1. Minimum size cage or above the minimum size cage. (80cm x 50cm min)
  2. 10-12 inch wheel (12inch for Syrian's)
  3. Hamster food (and bowl)
  4. Safe bedding (fill to 6-inches)
  5. Water bottle or bowl.
  6. Treats
  7. Toys and accessories
  8. Hideouts
  9. Sand bath
  10. Play pen or hamster proof a room of your choice.
  11. Foraging mixes (enrichment)
  • Once you know you have the most important things on the checklist, you'll need to set up the cage before the hamster arrives. This will make the transition easier for your hamster because you don't know how long you'll take to set the cage up- meanwhile your hamster will be scared in the carrier or box he was put in. The cage should be in a room that is relatively quiet all the time and away from other animals like dogs or cats. A living room, for example, wouldn't be suitable because of how much time people spend in there and the TV. A spare room that isn't used or a bedroom would be the most suitable place, never put your hamster in a room such as a garage because of how cold it is!
  • It's best to put the carrier or box into the cage and let your hamster come out when they're ready. You'll need to be quiet as any sudden or loud noise will frighten him. Make sure any of his old bedding is put into the cage as well so there is a familiar smell because everything is new.
  • Your hamster is probably going to be exploring for a while and deciding where they're going to set up their nest, during this time it's best if you leave the room or watch and be very quiet.
  • For the next week or two you should only interact with your hamster if your putting fresh food, water or treats in their cage. By introducing your voice your hamster will start to recognise you more and more. But don't force any interactions as they need to settle in properly, and avoid any other pets entering the room the hamster is in and they'll both smell each other.
