1. Can hamsters become overweight? = Hamsters can become overweight if they are being fed too many sugary foods such as yoghurt drop treats, fruit, and sometimes excess amounts of veg. To prevent your hamster from becoming overweight you'll need to be careful what you feed them and how much you feed them. If your young child is responsible for looking after the hamster, you have to make them aware of not over feeding.
  2. Should I avoid boredom breakers that contain sawdust? = Typically yes you should. Some boredom breaker hideouts have been created with parts of sawdust, it can be dangerous if your hamster were to be chewing the hideout. However if your hamster doesn't chew the boredom breaker hideout then I would keep it in there because it can't do any harm by just sitting there. But if your hamster does chew the hideout then I would suggest taking it out of the cage.
  3. Should I switch my Flyin' saucer wheel over to a normal style wheel? = Yes I personally would. Flyin' saucer wheels usually do not have the same effect as the normal style wheels (trixie). Syrian's tend to struggle to run on these because they are long and it isn't a natural running position for them anyway. For me personally, I prefer the normal style wheels and would never give my hamster a Flyin' saucer.
  4. Why is my hamster bar biting? = Hamsters bar bite because of boredom or stress. Either your cage is below the minimum and your hamster is trying to tell you that they do not have enough room to walk around and explore, they do not have a suitable wheel or wheel size, or that you aren't providing them with enough enrichment. This behaviour needs to be stopped ASAP due to teeth and psychological problems.
  5. What can I do to provide enrichment? = See the topic 'Enrichment' for detail. However you can provide forage mixes (in a pet store), hiding some treats around the cage and purchase some willow sticks, snap them in half and place all around the cage.
  6. Why is my hamster scared of humans? = This is a common behaviour in hamsters that are extremely anxious or have had bad experiences with humans in the past. The best thing you can do is respect how your hamster is, and leave them alone. Only put food, water and/ or foraging mixes into the cage to avoid an unnecessary interactions. Your hamster may just need time to adjust, and if your constantly putting your hands into the cage you're going to scare them even more.
  7. Why doesn't my hamster want to be picked up? = It's common for hamsters to not like being picked up by humans.. It's fairly natural for some hamsters not to enjoy being picked up, there is nothing you can do about this because this is just how your hamster is. If a hamster doesn't like you doing something it's a good idea to stop doing it as they may get angry and bite you at some point.
  8. Can you make homemade treats for your hamster? = Yes! There are lots of videos and recipes on Google that you can follow. Make sure that you don't over feed and that you are using the healthiest ingredients and careful amounts.
  9. Can I wake my hamster up in the day? = No, do not disturb your hamster purposely during the day. You should only be waking your hamster during the day if they need to go to the Vet for an appointment. If you wake your hamster up during the day they may bite you and be very angry as they're supposed to be sleeping.
  10. Do hamsters cost a lot of money? = YES! They cost a lot of money due to the cage requirements, correct wheel, toys and foraging mixes. You shouldn't be purchasing a hamster thinking that they are going to be cheap and easy because they are not! You will not get away with a below the minimum cage or wheel and not providing them with enrichment, they will soon start showing signs of stress.
